Sealants
Dental sealants are an essential preventive dental treatment that can significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay, especially in children and teenagers. These thin, protective coatings are typically applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars) where decay often begins.
Sealant Process
The application process for dental sealants is quick, painless, and non-invasive. First, our dentist thoroughly cleans and dries the tooth. Then, an acidic gel is briefly applied to roughen the tooth surface, allowing the sealant to bond more effectively. After rinsing and drying the tooth again, the dentist carefully applies the sealant material, which flows into the grooves and depressions of the tooth. Finally, a special light is used to harden the sealant, creating a durable protective shield.
Benefits of Sealants
Dental sealants offer numerous benefits:
Protection against cavities – Sealants can reduce the risk of decay in molars by up to 80% in the first two years after application.
Cost-effective – Preventing cavities with sealants is generally less expensive than treating decay after it occurs.
Long-lasting – With proper care, dental sealants can last for several years before needing replacement.
Safe for all ages – While most commonly applied to children’s teeth, adults can also benefit from dental sealants.
Sealants are typically applied to children’s teeth soon after the eruption of permanent molars and premolars, usually between the ages of 6 and 14. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also receive sealants as a preventive measure.
Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor the condition of sealants and ensure their continued optimal protection. While sealants are highly effective, they should be used in conjunction with comprehensive oral hygiene practices, including twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and a balanced diet low in sugary and acidic foods. This holistic approach to dental care helps maintain overall oral health and prevents other dental issues beyond tooth decay.
