Root Canals
A root canal is a vital dental procedure designed to preserve a severely damaged or infected tooth. This common endodontic treatment involves the removal of the compromised pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the root canal. The process includes thorough cleaning, disinfection, filling, and sealing of the affected area.
Root canals are typically necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. Several factors can lead to this condition, including:
– Deep decay.
– Repeated dental procedures on the tooth.
– Cracks or chips in the tooth structure.
Without proper treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth can become infected, potentially leading to severe pain and, in extreme cases, tooth loss. Timely intervention through a root canal procedure can effectively address these issues, alleviating pain and preserving the natural tooth structure.
The Root Canal Procedure
The root canal procedure is a straightforward dental treatment, often no more uncomfortable than receiving a standard filling. Here’s a brief overview of what happens during a root canal:
– Our dentist takes X-rays to assess the extent of damage and infection.
– Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area around the affected tooth.
– A small access hole is drilled into the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canal.
– The infected or damaged pulp is removed using special tools.
– The inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and shaped.
– The cleaned root canal is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.
– The access hole is sealed with a temporary filling.
– A crown or other restoration is usually placed to protect the tooth and restore full function.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
It’s important to note that not all teeth requiring root canal therapy are painful. However, several symptoms may indicate the need for this procedure:
– Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure
– Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
– Dark discoloration of the tooth
– Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
– Persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
At SoBro Dental, we prioritize patient education and preventive care to help maintain oral health and reduce the need for future root canal treatments.
